Installation

If you have an existing fireplace that needs to be up dated or adapted we can take out your old fireplace and prepare it for a stove or simply install into your original surround. The following 3 pictures show the transformation from an old existing fireplace to a beautiful opening with a Halnaker Stoves wood burner.

Solid fuel fires can be just as likely as gas fires to cause carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning if they are poorly installed, faulty or incorrectly used. Inadequate insulation of a chimney causes condensation, which combines with the fumes to produce tar and sulphuric acid. This attacks the brickwork, eating into the mortar resulting in dangerous joint leakage and carries with it combustible tars which settle deep into the brickwork. At best this will eventually show as tar staining on the outer walls of the chimney and at worst it will eventually ignite and could also lead to the total collapse of the chimneystack.

A metal twin skinned liner with insulation is installed with a stove (seen here in the first picture) to prevent all of the above-mentioned happening. Or for an open fire Thermocrete is used, which relines your chimney with no constructional work it has 25 years guarantee and is ISO9002 quality assured.

Solid Fuel Installation Specification

Halnaker Stoves is HETAS registered.
What does this mean? Here is an extract from the www.hetas.co.uk wed site explaining what Hetas is and why it is important to have a registered company to install your solid fuel appliance.

Competent Persons Scheme
Introduction
From the 1st of April 2002 people wishing to have a new (or Replacement) solid fuel or wood burning product(s) installed in their homes will have to obtain Building Control Approval from either their Local Authority or through the Competent Persons Scheme being operated by HETAS Ltd.

HETAS Ltd
HETAS Ltd (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) with its distinctive three-tick logo, is the organisation recognised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) as the official approval body for the domestic solid fuel industry. Established in 1936, HETAS Ltd is a non profit making independent body whose prime function is to ensure that the highest possible standards are maintained throughout the solid fuel heating industry by regular testing and inspection of appliances, fuels and other associated equipment used in the domestic market.

Why are the Rules Changing?
As part of the Governments drive to improve standards throughout the construction industry and to further the conservation of fuel and power, the existing Building Regulations covering the installation of domestic heating equipment have undergone a major revision These new Building Regulations will apply to the installation of all new heating appliances using solid fuel, oil or gas and will come into force on the 1st April 2002.

Will Standards be improved?
Historically, the vast majority of installations of heating appliances even by reputable companies have not been notified to local authorities and as a result, have not been inspected by Building Control. However, there are many thousands of installations carried out each year by companies or individuals who have little or no experience, often to a poor standard of workmanship which may result in an unsafe installation.

How will the Competent Persons Scheme help me?
HETAS Ltd with long history of dealing with all matters relating to solid fuel and appliances has developed a Registration Scheme for Companies and Individual Engineers involved with the installation of appliances and other related equipment. However, it should be noted that not all of the companies are registered for the installation of central heating and some chimney lining systems. It is therefore important to confirm what level of registration the company has before placing your order. Companies applying for membership of the HETAS Ltd Registration Scheme will have to meet a number of conditions before acceptance
The main conditions are:

  • They employ HETAS Ltd trained engineers
  • That their workmanship (on inspection) is of a good standard
  • They have the required level of Public Liability Insurance
  • They respond to customers concerns in a positive way
Companies accepted into membership of the Registration Scheme will not need to seek building control approval before commencing work. This will save you both time and money.

Service and Maintenance
In order to ensure that your new solid fuel fired appliance maintains its performance and operates in a safe manner HETAS Ltd recommends that an annual service (including chimney sweeping) is carried out. Many of the companies registered with HETAS Ltd are additionally able to undertake service and maintenance in a professional manner. The addresses above should be contacted to identify which companies are registered for this type of work.

Gas Installation Specification

Halnaker Stoves is CORGI registered.
What does this mean? Here is an extract from the www.corgi-gas-safety.com wed site explaining what Corgi is and why it is important to have a registered company to install your gas appliance.

When gas is used correctly and with respect it is a safe and economical fuel. To make sure you and your family remain safe from the possible dangers of gas, follow these simple steps to gas safety:

  • Ensure appliances are checked for safety annually by a CORGI Registered Installer
  • Be cautious when buying second hand appliances. Do not save on safety.
  • Never be tempted to DIY with gas.

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place specific duties on gas users, installers, suppliers and landlords. For example:

  • Anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of their business must be competent and registered with CORGI.
  • Only a competent person can carry out work on gas appliances or fittings. Do-it-yourself work on gas appliances or fittings could be dangerous and is likely to be illegal.
  • Do not use any gas appliance or fittings you know or suspect to be unsafe. Through CORGI, the Health & Safety Executive has asked all registered installers to disconnect any gas appliance or fittings that are so dangerous as to be a threat to life if they are used.
  • Landlords are responsible for making sure that gas fittings and flues are maintained in good order, and gas appliances that they own in their residential premises, and flues, are checked for safety every 12 months. They must also keep a record of the safety checks for at least two years and issue it to existing tenants and any new tenants before they move in.
  • Tenants are responsible for the maintenance and safety of appliances they own.

About Corgi Gas Installers

The regulations place a number of restrictions on gas appliances installed in bathrooms, shower rooms and bedrooms which are detailed and prescriptive.

It is illegal to install instantaneous water heaters, which are not room sealed or fitted with a safety device that automatically turns the gas supply off before a dangerous level of poisonous fumes builds up.

When gas is used correctly and with respect it is a safe and economical fuel. However - as with any area of expertise - people working with gas need to have the appropriate training and experience. CORGI Registered Installers have to undergo at least the minimum requirement of training before they are accepted on to the CORGI register. Most have significantly more training. The training and assessments that registered gas installers have are not only about the technical know-how of specific appliances but also about safety. All assessments have to be renewed every five years in order to keep installers up to date with ever-changing standards and regulations and to keep their knowledge fresh.

It is not only illegal for people to work with gas unless they are CORGI Registered, it is also highly dangerous. Statistics demonstrate that a significant proportion of gas work carried out by people who are not registered with CORGI is incorrect and therefore potentially unsafe.

If you need gas installation or maintenance work, make sure that you employ a CORGI Registered Installer with the appropriate training and credentials. CORGI Registered Installers will make sure that your appliances meet all gas safety and building regulations and that you have the necessary documentation you may need to sell your house in the future. If you are unsure whether your installer has the appropriate registration to handle your work, ask to see their ID card and check the details on the reverse.

In order to protect the general public, CORGI Registered Installers are:

  • Given an identification card which should be shown upon request
  • Required to obtain competency certificates in areas of gas work they carry out
  • Required to update their proof of competence regularly
  • Subject to regular work inspections carried out by CORGI Inspectors

Oil Installation Specification

Halnaker Stoves is OFTEC registered.
What does this mean? Here is an extract from the www.oftec.co.uk wed site explaining what Oftec is and why it is important to have a registered company to install your oil appliance.

Why you should choose an OFTEC registered technician

Whether you are selecting a technician to give your oil boiler, cooker or stove its annual service, or planning a much bigger project – a home extension or conversion of your heating to run on oil – you will want to ensure that you employ the best person for the job. You need an experienced technician who has been trained on modern, high efficiency appliances, who can give you sound advice when necessary, and whom you can trust to carry out the work properly. In short, you need an OFTEC Registered technician. There’s a simple way to avoid the risk of falling victim to a ‘cowboy’ operator. Before you ask a technician to call, enquire if he or she is OFTEC Registered (and if not, why not?)

OFTEC Registered Technicians:

  • Are individually trained at an OFTEC Approved Training Centre, and their skills independently assessed before they can apply for OFTEC Registration
  • Have their work inspected from time to time by an OFTEC Inspector
  • Are re-assessed every five years to maintain their Registration
  • Carry an identity card confirming the type of oil heating work for which they are registered
  • Have to hold appropriate insurance to work in your home
  • Are able (in England and Wales) to self-certify work for which they are Registered. This saves you time and money, as non-Registered technicians must, by law, notify Local Authority Building Control, or submit plans when installing oil-fired appliances
  • Will leave with you a written statement of the work they have done on your appliance, replacement parts fitted and recommendations for work needed in the future.
