Solid fuel fires can be just as likely as gas fires to cause carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning if they are poorly installed, faulty or incorrectly used. Inadequate insulation of a chimney causes condensation, which combines with the fumes to produce tar and sulphuric acid. This attacks the brickwork, eating into the mortar resulting in dangerous joint leakage and carries with it combustible tars which settle deep into the brickwork. At best this will eventually show as tar staining on the outer walls of the chimney and at worst it will eventually ignite and could also lead to the total collapse of the chimneystack.
A metal twin skinned liner with insulation is installed with a stove (seen here in the first picture) to prevent all of the above-mentioned happening. Or for an open fire Thermocrete is used, which relines your chimney with no constructional work it has 25 years guarantee and is ISO9002 quality assured.

Competent Persons Scheme
Introduction
From the 1st of April 2002 people wishing to have a new (or Replacement) solid fuel
or wood burning product(s) installed in their homes will have to obtain Building
Control Approval from either their Local Authority or through the Competent Persons
Scheme being operated by HETAS Ltd.
HETAS Ltd
HETAS Ltd (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme) with its distinctive three-tick
logo, is the organisation recognised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
(ODPM) as the official approval body for the domestic solid fuel industry. Established
in 1936, HETAS Ltd is a non profit making independent body whose prime function
is to ensure that the highest possible standards are maintained throughout the solid
fuel heating industry by regular testing and inspection of appliances, fuels and
other associated equipment used in the domestic market.
Why are the Rules Changing?
As part of the Governments drive to improve standards throughout the construction
industry and to further the conservation of fuel and power, the existing Building
Regulations covering the installation of domestic heating equipment have undergone
a major revision These new Building Regulations will apply to the installation of
all new heating appliances using solid fuel, oil or gas and will come into force
on the 1st April 2002.
Will Standards be improved?
Historically, the vast majority of installations of heating appliances even by reputable
companies have not been notified to local authorities and as a result, have not
been inspected by Building Control. However, there are many thousands of installations
carried out each year by companies or individuals who have little or no experience,
often to a poor standard of workmanship which may result in an unsafe installation.
How will the Competent Persons Scheme help me?
HETAS Ltd with long history of dealing with all matters relating to solid fuel and
appliances has developed a Registration Scheme for Companies and Individual Engineers
involved with the installation of appliances and other related equipment. However,
it should be noted that not all of the companies are registered for the installation
of central heating and some chimney lining systems. It is therefore important to
confirm what level of registration the company has before placing your order. Companies
applying for membership of the HETAS Ltd Registration Scheme will have to meet a
number of conditions before acceptance

Companies accepted into membership of the Registration Scheme will not need to seek building control approval before commencing work. This will save you both time and money.
Service and Maintenance
In order to ensure that your new solid fuel fired appliance maintains its performance
and operates in a safe manner HETAS Ltd recommends that an annual service (including
chimney sweeping) is carried out. Many of the companies registered with HETAS Ltd
are additionally able to undertake service and maintenance in a professional manner.

The regulations place a number of restrictions on gas appliances installed in bathrooms, shower rooms and bedrooms which are detailed and prescriptive.
It is illegal to install instantaneous water heaters, which are not room sealed or fitted with a safety device that automatically turns the gas supply off before a dangerous level of poisonous fumes builds up.

CORGI Registered Installers have to undergo at least the minimum requirement of training before they are accepted on to the CORGI register. Most have significantly more training. It is not only illegal for people to work with gas unless they are CORGI Registered, it is also highly dangerous. Statistics demonstrate that a significant proportion of gas work carried out by people who are not registered with CORGI is incorrect and therefore potentially unsafe.
If you need gas installation or maintenance work, make sure that you employ a CORGI Registered Installer with the appropriate training and credentials. CORGI Registered Installers will make sure that your appliances meet all gas safety and building regulations and that you have the necessary documentation you may need to sell your house in the future.
